They said time has come to enhance acreage of wheat farming instead of depending on only Irri-boro paddy in the dried area amidst the adverse impact of climate change.

The observation came in a field day-cum-farmers gathering under the banner “Projection of High Yielding Wheat Variety and Improving Crop and Soil Productivity with saving Inputs through Conservation Agriculture”.

Regional Wheat Research Center (RWRC) and Bangladesh Wheat and Maize Research Institute jointly organised the function in Bakherabad Sophapur area under Mohadevpur Upazila yesterday afternoon.

Chairman of Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) Dr Akram Hossain Chowdhury addressed the gatherings as the chief guest with its Executive Engineer Abdul Maleque Chowdhury in the chair.

Professor Dr Moshiur Rahman from Bangladesh Agricultural University, RWRC Principal Scientific Officer Dr Ilias Hossain, Upazila Agriculture Officer Mofidul Islam and BMDA Assistant Engineers Ashiqur Rahman, Abu Sadat Sayem and Harun Or Rashid also spoke.

Dr Chowdhury suggested farmers to increase uses of appropriate farm machinery like power tiller operated seeder, strip till and zero till, bed planter, reaper and thresher to enhance production especially wheat.

Prof Rahman said more emphasis should be given on expansion of short duration and high-yielding wheat varieties.
