7 militants to die for murdering Khadem in Rangpur

 RANGPUR, March 18, 2018 (BSS) – A Special Tribunal here handed down death sentence to 7 militants for the 2015 murder of Rahamat Ali, 60, Khadem of Tepamadhupur ‘Mazar’ (shrine) in Kawnia upazila of the district.

Judge Naresh Chandra Sarker of the Special Tribunal in Rangpur pronounced the verdict in presence of eleven out of thirteen accused in the case.

The judge also fined each of the convicts Taka 20,000. The court, however, acquitted six other accused in the murder case of Rahamat.

A group of outlawed Jama’atul Mujahedeen Bangladesh (JMB) assailants slaughtered Khadem Rahamat Ali of village Tepamadhupur under Kawnia upazila near his house at night on November 10, 2015.

The seven convicts are JMB operatives Masud Rana, Bijoy, Esahak Ali, Chandu Mian, Litan Mian, Sarwar Hossain and Shakhawat Hossain.

Six of the convicts were present on the dock while convict Chandu Mian is still on the run.

Four of the seven convicts Masud Rana, Esahak Ali, Litan Mian and Shakhawat Hossain were also sentenced to death by the same court in another verdict announced on February 28 last year for the 2015 murder of Japanese national Kunio Hoshi in the same upazila.

Sadat alias Ratan, Taufikul Islam, Abu Sayeed, Jahangir Hossain alias Rajib, Rajibul Islam and Babul Akhter are acquitted. Rajibul Islam is absconding.

Special Public Prosecutor Advocate Rothish Chandra Bhowmick said,

“Shafikul Islam, son of the deceased, filed a murder case in this connection with Kawnia police station after the killing of his father on November 10, 2015,” Bhowmick said.

After investigation, Kawnia Thana police submitted charge sheet against the 13 accused persons on July 3, 2016.

Public Prosecutor of Rangpur Advocate Abdul Malek and Special Public Prosecutor Advocate Rothish Chandra Bhowmick stood for the state while a group of lawyers led by senior Advocate Abul Hossain and senior Advocate Aftab Hossain defended the accused side.
