Historic Mujibnagar Day observed in Ctg

CHATTOGRAM, April 17, 2019 (BSS)- Awami League (AL) and its front organizations

observed historic Mujibnagar Day in Chattogram city, as well as in rest of the district

in a befitting manner .

On April 17 in 1971, the provisional Bangladesh government took oath at

Baidyanathtala mango grove in Meherpur, in the then Kushtia district.

Chattogram city, north and south chapters of AL observed the day through day long

programmes.

Marking the day, AL leaders and workers hoisted national and party flags atop all

party offices and placed wreaths at the portraits of the Father of the Nation

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and four national leaders in their respective

offices.

A meeting was organized by Chittagong City Unit AL at central Shaheed Minar this

afternoon with acting city unit AL President Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury in the chair.

City unit AL general secretary and City Mayor A Z M Nasir Uddin, AL leaders Noymuddin

Chowdhury, newly appointed Chairman of Chattogram Development Authority, Jahourul Alam

Dobhash, Khurshed Alam Sujan, MA Rashid and Advocate Iftekhar Saimul, among others,

took part in the discussion while city AL join secretary Noman Al Mahmud conducted the

function.

People of all walks of life including politicians, educationists and freedom fighters

also attended the function.

Speakers in their discussion paid glowing tributes to Father of the Nation

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and four national leaders who led the Liberation War.

Recalling the enormous importance of the historic day, the speakers said the War of

Liberation got a specific shape on this day in 1971 when the provisional government was

formed.

In the absence of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who was arrested after

declaration of country’s independence soon after midnight on March 25, 1971 and kept in

jail in the then West Pakistan during the entire Liberation War senior AL leader Syed

Nazrul Islam took oath as the acting president in the absence of Bangabandhu, Tajuddin

Ahmed as prime minister, while Khandaker Moshtaq Ahmed, Captain M Mansur Ali and AHM

Quamaruzzaman were also sworn in as cabinet ministers.

Chattogram South and North district AL also organized separate meetings at their

respective party offices in the city’s Andarkilla and Dost Building areas.

Presided over by acting president of Chattogram south district AL Mohammad Idris

while its general secretary Mofizur Rahman, AL leaders Ajit Datto, Mujibur Rahman

(CIP), among others, participated in the discussion.
