5,551km canal to be excavated in 64 districts: Zaheed Farooque

DHAKA, APRIL 17, 2019 (BSS) – State Minister for Water Resources
Ministry Zaheed Farooque, MP today said the government has taken initiatives
to excavate 5,551 kilometre-long canals in 64 districts along with saving
main rivers across the country.

The state minister revealed it while addressing a seminar arranged in
observance of the World Water Day-2019 at Bangladesh Water Development
Board’s conference room.

Bangladesh National Committee of International Commission on Irrigation
and Drainage (ICID) organised the seminar.

Deputy Minister for Water Resources AKM Enamul Haque Shamim addressed the
seminar as the guest of honor while and Water Secretary Kabir Bin Anwar
present there as special guest.

Enamul Haque Shamim said the Prime Minister has instructed to carry out
dredging whenever navigability is appeared to be reduced due to siltation.

“We are following the Prime Minister’s instruction,” he added.

He also mentioned that Water Resources ministry and Shipping ministry
jointly have been running drives to demolish illegal establishments along
river banks and it will continue in the days to come.

Director of the Joint River Commission and Member Secretary of BANCID Md
Mahmudur Rahman gave the welcome speech while Director General of Bangladesh
Water Development Board and BANCID Chairman Engineer Md Mahfuzur Rahman
presided over the seminar.

Department of Water Resources Engineering of Bangladesh Engineering
University (BUET) Professor Dr Umme Kulsum Navera presented the keynote paper
at the seminar.

Managing Director of Dhaka WASA Engineer Taksim A Khan, President of
Bangladesh Water Partnership HS Mojaddad Faruk, Additional Director General
(Planning) of Bangladesh Water Development Board AM Aminul Haque, Executive
Director of Institute of Institute of Water Modeling or IWM Professor Dr. M
Monowar Hossain, Executive Director of the Centre for Environmental and
Geographic Information Services (CEGIS) Engineer Md. Engr. Md. Waji Ullah and
Joint-Secretary of Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA) Mihir Biswas took part
in the seminar as discussants.
