President for gearing up NHRC activities at grassroots

DHAKA, May 16, 2017 (BSS) -President M Abdul Hamid yesterday asked the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to gear up its activities at grassroots level to create public awareness and establish the rights of common people.

“Take intensified initiatives to reach the activities of the National Human Rights Commission at the grassroots level ,” the President told NHRC topbrass when a five-member delegation led by its Chairman Kazi Reazul Hoque made a courtesy call on him at Bangabhaban.

President’s press secretary Joynal Abedin told BSS after the meeting. During the meeting, Abdul Hamid hoped that the commission will put all-out efforts to uphold the human rights of the common people.

The NHRC delegation apprised the President of the overall activities, including future work-plan, of the commission. They said the commission is working with different issues in consultation with the representatives of the civil society and Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), which has meantime got a very positive response.

They informed the President that the commission in the meantime formed 10 thematic committees to oversee some 10 matters related to human rights.

The delegation also sought guidelines to run their activities more effectively. Other NHRC members include: Mohammad Nazrul Islam, Enamul Haque Chowdhury, Prof Akhter Hossain and Hiranmaya Barai, and secretaries concerned to the President were present.
