BAB donates Tk 136.20 crore to three benevolent bodies

DHAKA, May 16, 2017 (BSS) – Bangladesh Association of Bankers (BAB) yesterday donated Taka 136.20 crore to three benevolent organisations dedicated for social welfare, education and autism.

The three organizations are- Jatir Janak Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Memorial Trust, PM’s Education Assistance Trust Fund and Suchna Foundation, an organisation led by PM’s daughter Saima Hossain, dedicated to the autistic people.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina received the cheques of the donations from the representatives of 37 banks at her Gonobhaban residence here.

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal, Chief of Army Staff General Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Huq, FBCCI president Abdul Matlub Ahmed, president of BAB Nazrul Islam Majumder and chairmen and senior officials of the banks were present.

BAB Donated Taka 57.45 crore for Jatir Janak Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Memorial Trust, Taka 50.25 crore for PM’s Education Assistance Trust Fund and Taka 28.50 crore for Suchana Foundation.

Islami Bank has donated highest amount of Taka 15 crore while National Bank has donated second highest amount of Taka 6 crore. Nine banks have given Taka five crore each and other established commercial banks gave Taka four crore each.

BAB president greeted the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina with a bouquet of 37 roses on behalf of 37 banks of the association.

Extending her thanks to the bankers for the donation, the Prime Minister said her government is making efforts to make education affordable for every people. The government has created the education trust fund in this regard.

“We have started the trust fund with government fund of Taka 1000 crore. We want active participation of the private sector to promote welfare activities,” she said adding that all support to education and autistic people would enjoy tax exemption.

Sheikh Hasina praised the role of private banks in strengthening country’s economy saying private banks have played vital role in employment generation and boosting country’s economy.

Later a delegation of businessmen and various industrial organizations under Bangladesh Export Processing Zone Authority (BEPZA) also donated Taka 29,05,90,000 to the Prime Minister’s Relief and Welfare Fund, Bangabandhu Memorial Trust Fund and Prime Minister’s Education Assistance Trust Fund.

Executive Chairman of BEPZA Major General Muhammad habibur Rahman Khan handed over a cheque of Taka 2,55,90,000 to the Prime Minister for Prime Minister’s Relief and Welfare Fund. Syed Mohamamd Tanvir, director of M/S Pacific Zeans, Mujibur Rahman, Managing Director of M/S Smart Group of Industries, Chang Yoe Chong Felix, chairman of Evergreen Group, Nilesh Zain of M/S Kun Tong Apparels Ltd, Prem Sony of M/S Apic Garments Manufacturing Co. Ltd, Sharif Jahir of Ananta Group, Jalal Ahmed of M/S Qatar Marble Co. BD Ltd and former army chief General Abul Mubeen (retd), Chairman of United Power Generation and Distribution Co. Ltd, handed over the cheques to the Prime Minister.

Chairman of Amin Mohammad Group M M Enamul Haque donated taka three crore to the PM’s education fund while Chairman of Aman Group Rafiqul Islam, president of REHAB Alamgir Shamsul Alamin, Managing Director (MD) of Anwar Group of Industries Manwar Hossain, Basundhara Group chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, Managing Director (MD) of UNIQUE Group Md. Noor Ali, Managing Director (MD) of DESH Energy Navidul Huq, chairman of Innoventure Ptv. Ltd Chowdhury Nafeez Sarafat and Meghna Group donated Taka two crore each to the PM’s education fund.

FBCCI President Abdul Matlub Ahmed, Jitendra Bahadur, country head of Bangladesh TATA Motors, Chairman of Bengal Group and RTV Morshed Alam, Chairman of Crown Cement Group Jahangir Alam donated one crore each to the PM’s Education Assistance Trust Fund.
