Pahela Baishakh celebrated in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, April 15, 2019 (BSS) – Pahela Baishakh, first day of Bengali New Year-1426, was celebrated in all the seven upazilas of the district as elsewhere in the country yesterday with much enthusiasm and traditional festivities.

Marking the day in a befitting manner district and upazila
administrations, different educational institutions and socio-cultural
organizations including Gaibandha Press Club chalked out the elaborate
programmes separately.

In the morning, a function on feeding panta bhat with fried hilsha, chili,
pata shak, shutki bharta was held at the bungalow of deputy commissioner (DC)
of the town where district level officials, leaders of different professional
groups, cultural personalities and town elite, including journalists
participated spontaneously.

Later, a Mongal Shobhajatra led by whip of the Jatiya Sangshad and local
lawmaker Mahabub Ara Begum Gini at the arrangement of district administration
was brought out from Independence Square and ended at the same venue after
parading the main roads of the town.

The programme was followed by a discussion meeting at the stage of
Independence Square where whip Mahabub Ara Begum Gini, police super Engineer
Abdul Mannan Miah, general secretary of Bangladesh Awami League, district
unit, Abu Bakar Siddique and mayor of Gaibandha Municipality Advocate Shah
Masud Jahangir Kabir Milon addressed, among others while DC Abdul Matin
presided over the function.

Later, a cultural function was also held welcoming the Bengali New Year
Eso Hey Baishakh Eso Eso. Baishakhi Mela was held side by side with quiz
competition on the premises of Independence Square.

Improved diets were distributed to the jail inmates and the children of
Govt. Shishu Paribars.

Traditional Halkhata was also held at the arrangement of the businessmen
in haats-bazars, groceries, sales centers and important places in both rural
and urban areas distributing sweets among their customers.

The zila police adopted tight security measures to ensure law and order
for peaceful celebrations of the day, said additional police super Rahaat
Gowhary.

Talking to the correspondent of the national news agency, DC Abdul Matin
said the district got festive mood as the Pahela Baishakh was celebrated
through active participation of the people from all walks of life.
