UNFPA representative calls on Speaker

 DHAKA, March 11, 2018 (BSS) – United National Population Fund (UNFPA) country representative Dr Asa Britta Torkelsson made a courtesy call on Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury at her office here today.

During the meeting, they discussed about the proceedings of the Jatiya Sangsad, women empowerment and importance of celebrating International Women’s Day, said a press release here today.

Hailing the contribution of UNFPA’s different development activities in the country, the Speaker said, “Members of the parliament are actively involved in the projects undertaken by the UNFPA.”

Dr Shirin said through different programmes, the UNFPA has played a positive role in reducing maternal and infant mortality rate and eradicating child marriage in the country.

She hopes that UNFPA would continue its support in improving children and mother’s health care in the days to come.

Mentioning Dr Shirin as a role model in establishing women empowerment, Dr Torkelsson said women can excel in life if given equal opportunity.

The UNFPA country representative praised the role of ‘Joyeeta’, a government supported organization, in facilitating women entrepreneurs at grassroots level.
