‘Book-reading produces self-educated people’

RANGPUR, April 5, 2019 (BSS) – Book-reading is most important and a
prerequisite to improve overall education for producing self-educated citizen
to build a prosperous and technology-based digital Bangladesh.

Government officials, academicians and literary personalities viewed this
at an inaugural function of the eight-day Rangpur Book Fair-2019 held on
Public Library ground in the city today.

The district administration with assistance of the Ministry of Cultural
Affairs and Jatiya Granthokendra is organising the fair.

Seventy-three stalls have been set up by book publishing houses of the
capital city, district administration, Shishu Academy, local writers, poets,
literarily organisations and personalities on the fair premises.

Director (Joint Secretary) of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs Md Shawkat
Ali inaugurated the fair as the chief guest with Deputy Commissioner Enamul
Habib in the chair.

Additional Police Superintendent Maruf Hossain, President of district Awami
League Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed, its Office Secretary Tauhidur Rahman Tutul,
literary personalities Professor Shah Alam and Dr Mofizul Islam Mantu, among
others, spoke.

Deputy Director (Local Government) and Additional Deputy Commissioner
(Education and ICT) Ruhul Amin Mian in his welcome speech narrated the goals
of arranging the fair.

The speakers said book fair would generate interests among young
generations in reading books to make the government’s plan to improve overall
education for building a technology-based developed country.

Shawkat Ali said the inevitable index of building an esteemed technology-
rich digital Bangladesh is to produce self-educated people for making a well-
educated, thoughtful, knowledge-based and modern society free from corruption
and superstitions.

“The most essential component and main key to achieving this goal are
books. There is no alternative to reading books for being enlightened. So,
everyone should read books for acquiring knowledge,” he said.

The Deputy Commissioner urged the students and young generations for
gifting books to their friends, dearer and nearer ones on their birthdays or
other auspicious occasions.

The fair will remain open for all from 3 pm to 9 pm daily. Competition on
recitation of poems and self-composed poems and quiz will be arranged
followed by colourful cultural evenings daily.
