Indians beat Jays, lose no-hit bid in the ninth
LOS ANGELES, April 5, 2019 (BSS/AFP) – Trevor Bauer flirted with the
Cleveland Indians’ first no-hitter since 1981 on Thursday night, throwing
seven superb innings in a 4-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.
Bauer, who struck out eight batters, combined with two relievers to take
the no-hit bid into the ninth, but the Jays busted it up with a lead off
single in the final frame.
The 28-year-old Bauer maintained the no-hitter through seven innings
despite walking six Toronto batters. He ended the seventh by fanning Lourdes
Gurriel, Alen Hanson and Brando Drury.
Jon Edwards sandwiched a pair of walks around a hit batter to load the
bases for Toronto in the eighth. But reliever Brad Hand got Gurriel to pop
out to the infield to end the threat.
Blue Jays Freddy Galvis then led off the ninth with a single off Hand which
put an end to Cleveland’s first no-hit bid since Len Barker threw a perfect
game against Toronto on May 15, 1981.
Hanson followed with another single, and Teoscar Hernandez ripped a pinch-
hit RBI double to left field.
Hand earned his third save of the season by striking out Randal Grichuk and
Rowdy Tellez to end the game.
Blue Jays starter Aaron Sanchez allowed two runs on five hits and struck
out five in six innings for the Jays, who have lost four of their last five.
Bauer improved to 3-2 overall against Toronto with his second straight
stellar start of the Major League Baseball season. He had nine strikeouts in
seven innings against Minnesota on Saturday.
Bauer was an all-star last season when he went 12-6 with a 2.21 ERA.
