International Women’s Day observed in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, MAR 9, 2018 (BSS) – The International Women’s Day-2018 was observed in the district as elsewhere in the country on Thursday with a vow to free the women folk from all sorts of violence, disparity and discrimination.

This year’s theme of the day was ‘Time is Now: Rural and Urban Activists Transforming Women’s Lives’.

Marking the day, SKS Foundation, a local reputed volunteer organisation , chalked out the elaborate programmes.

The programmes included bringing out colorful rally, quiz, debate, essay and indigenous sports competitions and holding medical camp for pregnant women.

Apart from it, a discussion on the significance of the day was also held on the premises of Rahmatpur MM High School at Sadar upazila in the afternoon with union parishad chairman Rafiqul Islam in the chair.

Upazila health and family planning officer Dr ABM Abu Hanif attended the function and addressed it as the chief guest.

Dr ABM Abu Hanif said overall national development cannot be possible until the womenfolk are educated and all their fundamental rights are ensured at every sphere of the society.

The physician also called for ending violence against women by empowering them socially and educationally so that they could be mainstreamed into the national development.

About 450 students, teachers, NGO activists, public representatives, cultural personalities and local elite including journalists took part in the events .
