24 identified out of 25 killed in Banani fire

DHAKA, March 29, 2019 (BSS) – A total of the 24 victims out of 25, who died in the devastating fire at the 22-storey FR Tower at Banani in the city, have been identified.

“Out of the 24 deceased identified so far, 18 people were male while six female,” sub-inspector Mokhlesur Rahman told reporters today at an information centre installed at Banani Police Station here.

The deceased are Farida Amena Yasmin, 48, Abdullah Al Mamu,40, Sri Lankan citizen Indika Marasingh, 46, Abdullah Al Faroque, 32, Maksudur Rahman, 32, Manir Hossain Sardar, 52, Mustafizur Rahman, 65, Mizanur Rahman, Florida Khanam Poly, 45, Ataur Rahman, 62, Rezaul Karim Raj, 40, Ahmed Zafar, 59, Rezubunnesa, 30, Salauddin Mitu, 25, Nahidul Islam Tusher, 35, Tanjira Mouli, 25, Parveez Sazzad, 46, Iftekhar Hossain Mitu, 37, Zareen Tasnim Brsity, 24, Fazle Rabbi, 30, Atiqur Rahman, 42, Anjir Siddique Abir, 27, Romki Akhter, 30, Manzur Hasan, 49, and Ayub Ali.

Mokhlesur said the bodies of the 24 diseased were handed over to their respective family members, while the body of one fire victim was put in Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) for DNA test aiming to know his or her identity.

The death toll in Thursday’s skyscraper fire in city’s Banani stood at 25 today with rescuers’ overnight extracting more bodies from rubbles.

“The toll eventually stood at 25,” Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam told an instant news briefing at the scene in the capital’s posh Banani area today as fire service rescuers aided by military troops completed their search for bodies inside the 22-storey FR Tower.

The fire broke out barely a month after a massive blaze in Dhaka’s old part that killed at least 70 people and injured 50 others, while fire service officials attributed the blaze to chemicals illegally stored in dilapidated buildings there.
