Govt committed to accelerate progress of backward Rangpur: Tipu

RANGPUR, March 28, 2019 (BSS) – Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi here tonight said the present government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is committed to accelerate development of backward Rangpur.

“Development plans for accelerating uplift in every sector of Rangpur are continuing so that Rangpur district would be considered as a model district of the country,” Tipu said.

Tipu said this while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion arranged commemorating memories of martyrs of March 28 Rangpur Cantonment Gherao Day at Bir Muktijoddha Tayebur Rahman High School ground here as the chief guest.

Earlier, he placed wreaths at Smriti Soudha “Rakta Gaurab” in the city where over 400 Bangalees irrespective of caste, creed and religion laid down lives in a bid to capture Rangpur Cantonment by attacking with indigenous weapons on March 28, 1971.

Tipu said March 28 is a red letter day in the history of the War of Liberation when the independence-seeker Bangalees attacked Rangpur cantonment at the call of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to capture it.

On that day in 1971, only after three-days of the March 25 crackdown by the Pakistani occupation forces on the unarmed innocent Bangalees, people of Rangpur gave evidence of responsibility and love for the country.

“That responsibility and love for the country should be continued and pro-liberation forces should have to work unitedly to build a middle income country by 2021 and a developed Bangladesh by 2041,” he said.

Reiterating to commitment of the present government to establishing a prosperous country, Tipu urged everyone to work with true patriotism, unconquerable bravery and determination of achieving independence as the Bangalees showed on March 28, 1971.

He said pipeline for supplying natural gas to Rangpur region would be established soon for development of the industrial sector in the region where Garment factories would also be set up to create jobs for backward population.

Besides, the Balasighat of Gaibandha will be made appropriate for speeding up industrialisation in the region. Tipu said, Rangpur district has already become self-sufficient in the agriculture sector with surplus food production contributing a lot to make the country’s agriculture sector sustainable.

“Steps are being taken to develop agricultural based industries in this region where the present government is planning to set up an agricultural university for research and development in the agricultural sector,” he said.

The number of trains on the Rangpur-Dhaka route would be increased, he said adding that the government is planning to set up a double rail lines for trains to ease communication networks of Rangpur with other districts.

The government is working for overall development of the road communication networks of Rangpur region. The minister said Rangpur Medical College will be converted into a Medical University so that medical students of this region could take higher studies in medical science side by side with further expansion of medical services in Rangpur division.

Acting President of district Awami League Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed, its city unit General Secretary Tushar Kanti Mandal, Organizing Secretary Kamruzzaman Chowdhury Tuhin, senior Awami League leader Advocate Elias Ahmed, among others, addressed President of local Garatipara Jam-e-Mosque and donor member of Haji Tamij Uddin Government Primary School Alhaj Tabarak Hossain presided over the discussion modearted by founder President of Bir Muktijopdah Tayyabur Rahman High School and City Councilor Tauhidul Islam.
