DHAKA, March 28, 2019 (BSS) – President M Abdul Hamid today asked the university authorities not to compromise on the quality of education and not to use the university as a business centre.
“Now our challenge is to ensure quality of education . . . So there is no compromise on it,” he said, addressing the 20th convocation of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) at Bashundhara here.
Abdul Hamid, also the chancellor of the university, added: “Keep in mind that university is the highest seat of learning but not a centre of business.”
Stressing on quality of higher education, he said if the quality cannot be ensured, the number of educated jobless people will increase along with the rise in the rate of higher education.
The head of the state urged the university authorities to adopt the curriculums for students considering all the realities and try to give relentless efforts for making the higher educational institutions as a real place for acquiring knowledge and doing time-befitting research.
He called upon the authorities concerned to contribute in building skilled human resources which would help fulfill the demands as well as expectations of the country and its people.
In the convocation, two graduates got Gold Medals from the President for scoring highest marks in their respective years.
Congratulating the new graduates, the president expressed his hope that they would put in their all-out efforts using talents and creativities for turning Bangladesh into a developed and prosperous country within 2041 in line with the vision of the incumbent government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The President said the country needs efficient manpower to build a happy and prosperous “Sonar Bangla”.
Referring to the tremendous development under this government, he said Bangladesh is now a proud member of the Space Satellite arena after the successful launching of the Bangabandhu Satellite-1 . . . The government is implementing various projects, including multipurpose Padma Bridge, different power plants, Payra Sea Port and Dhaka Metrorail.
“Put the sign of honesty, dedication and patriotism in your respective workplaces as you are the next leaders to face the changed global situation,” President Hamid said.
Terming the graduates architects of change in society, the President advised the students to take part in the struggle for building a developed “Sonar Bangla”, earlier envisioned by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
At the outset of his speech, Abdul Hamid paid rich tribute to the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, other patriotic souls who embraced martyrdoms during the 1971 Liberation War and other democratic movements of the country.
Founder Chairman of Biswa Sahitya Kendra Prof Abdullah Abu Sayeed delivered convocation speech while Deputy Minister for Education Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury, University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof Abdul Mannan, IUB Vice-Chancellor Prof M Omar Rahman, university trustee board Chairman A Matin Chowdhury, among others, were present on the occasion.
