DHAKA, March 27 (BSS)- Lal Jomin, a solo drama, based on the War of Liberation, was staged at the Jatiya Press Club (JPC) on the occasion of the Independence and National Day yesterday.

The 203rd show of the hour-long drama kept the audience spellbound in a jam-packed auditorium of the JPC.

The tremendous performance of a leading drama actress, Momena Chowdhury, portraying the role of a 14 years old village girl whose agony knew no bound during the liberation war, brought tears to the audience’s eyes.

Lal Jomin is the story of a girl, with war brewing at the horizon. She wonders around her village falling love with the beauty of it all. She also falls in love with a boy, who teases her from afar like the shadow of a bamboo thicket.

Her illusions of pristine world around her shattered, when one night she heard a whispered conversation between her parents. She heard of injustice, the repression and the hope for freedom.

The girl became adamant to free her motherland of foreign invaders even though she is far too young. Her father immediately joined the war of liberation after it began. She left the house to meet her father in the battle field but in the middle of her path, the girl, along with other women, was caught by the local collaborators of the Pakistani army and finally she was handed over to the occupying forces.

Basically, the Lal Jomin is the story of an unfettered girl’s saree transforming into a bloody rag and also the story of a little girl’s journey into womanhood through bloodshed, unrequited love and destruction.

Speaking on the occasion, JPC President Saiful Alam and Secretary Fariday Yasmin thanked the members of the club for making the Independence Day programme a success. JPC senior vice president Omar Faruque and managing committee member Shahnaz Begum were present.

They greeted Momena Chowdhury for her extra-ordinary performance and presented her with a crest of the club.
