South African envoy pays farewell call on FM

DHAKA, March 26, 2019 (BSS) – South African High Commissioner in Sri Lanka, concurrently accredited to Bangladesh, Robina P Marks made a farewell call on Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen at the latter’s office here today.

During the meeting, she informed that from April 01 this year, South Africa will carry out its diplomatic relations with Bangladesh from its Mission in New Delhi, said a press release of the Foreign Ministry.

Dr Momen expressed satisfaction at the existing bilateral relations between Bangladesh and South Africa and highlighted the immense potential to further strengthen bilateral ties, especially in trade and investment.

He underscored the massive investment opportunities that exist in Bangladesh in different sectors including Ready Made Garments, Pharmaceuticals, Fisheries, Leather products, Tourism etc.

The foreign minister highlighted that Bangladesh is fast moving towards becoming a developed country by 2041 through establishment of a just and inclusive society under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

He suggested that a South African business delegation could visit Bangladesh to explore the trade and investment opportunities.

The South African envoy described Bangladesh-South Africa relationship as warm, ancient and pragmatic.

Marks appreciated the unprecedented and historic humanitarian gesture shown by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for providing shelter to more than one million Rohingyas who have been forcibly displaced from their homeland in Myanmar.

She also informed that South Africa is considering the possibility of opening a Consulate in Dhaka in the near future.

Both sides agreed to sustain cooperation in different multilateral platforms. Both sides also discussed about the forthcoming Foreign Office consultation (FOC) scheduled to be held in May 2019.
