DU observes ‘Genocide Day’

DHAKA, March 25, 2019 – The University of Dhaka observed ‘Genocide Day’ today in remembrance of the brutality carried out by the Pakistan Army on unarmed Bengalees on the “Black Night” of March 25 in 1971.

DU authorities and DU Teachers’ Association (DUTA) jointly organised a programme at the Memory Eternal of DU marking the national day as well as the “Black Night of March 25, 1971”.

The programmes include– lighting of candles, screening documentaries and a holding a discussion meeting.

DUTA President Professor Dr Maksud kamal presided over the discussion. Teachers, students and employees of the university were present at the discussion.

While addressing the programme as the chief guest, DU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman paid rich tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and martyrs of the Liberation War.

The DU VC emphasised on diclaring the March 25 as an International Genocide Day.

DU Pro-Vc (Administration) Professor Dr Muhammad samad, DU Treasurer Prof Kamal Uddin and DU Alumni Association President A K Azad, among others, addressed the discussion.

Prayers were offered at all mosques and other places of worship on the campus. A one-minute “Black-out” programme was observed on the campus at 9 pm to symbolise the day.

Jagannath Hall authority and Bangladesh Chhatra League also held a memorial programmes commemorating the Day.
