Int’l Workshop on Antibiotics begins at DU

DHAKA, March 24, 2019 (BSS) – A two-day international workshop on
‘Development of Novel Antibiotics to Tackle Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)’
began today at Dhaka University (DU).

The Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry of DU organised the workshop at
CARS auditorium on the campus.

DU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Md. Akhtaruzzaman inaugurated the workshop
as the chief guest while Chief Editor of Herbal Medicine Journal of the
University of East London, UK Dr. Barbara Pendry and Dean of the Faculty of
Pharmacy of DU Prof Dr SM Abdur Rahman addressed it as special guests.

Professor of the University of East London Dr Mukhlesur Rahman also
addressed the programme. Coordinator of the workshop Prof Dr Md Abdur Rashid
delivered the welcome address.

While addressing the programme, DU VC Prof Akhtaruzzaman stressed the need
for creating awareness about misuse of antibiotics among the general people.

“We are becoming antimicrobial resistance due to misuse of antibiotics,”
he said.

He emphasized on strengthening monitoring and management system of drugs
to reduce antimicrobial resistance in Bangladesh.

Terming the antimicrobial resistance as a serious issue around the world,
the VC urged the doctors to play an effective role for promoting rational use
of antibiotics.

He underscored the need for joint collaborative research by national and
international experts as well as pharmacists to develop new antibiotics.

Academicians, researchers, pharmacists and scientists from different
countries including Bangladesh, India and the UK have participated in the
workshop.

Chairman of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry Prof. Dr. Md. Khalid
Hossain presided over the inaugural function.
