RAJSHAHI, March 24, 2019 (BSS)-Academics and researchers at a meeting here
have voiced for time-befitting and effective measures for biodiversity
conservation in the region including its vast Barind tract to protect its
ecological balance.

Protecting the biodiversity and wildlife sector particularly the bird
habitats can be the vital means of attracting tourists from both home and
abroad side by side with environmental protection.

The experts came up with the observation while conducting various sessions
of a daylong training workshop titled “Global Positioning System (GPS) and
Global Information System (GIS) related to Biodiversity Conservation” at
Desktop IT in the city on Saturday.

Bangladesh Biodiversity Conservation Federation (BBCF) hosted the workshop
in collaboration with Save the nature and Life, Better Nature and Society and
Bangladesh Livestock Society (BLS). More than 105 youths joined the
programme.

Prof Jalal Uddin Sarder and Dr Hemayatul Islam Arif from Department of
Veterinary and Animal Sciences at Rajshahi University and Dr Delower Hossain
from Shre-e Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka conducted the training
sessions as focal persons.

Wildlife Rescue and GPS expert Dr Nasir Uddin and BBCF General Secretary
Mizanur Rahman also disseminated their expertise on the issues concerned.

Prof Jalal mentioned that biodiversity is gradually declining due to
various natural and manmade catastrophes posing a serious threat to the whole
ecosystem.

In the wake of abnormal declining of natural resources like native crop
seeds, fish and birds species and other wildlife, conservation of natural
resources has become indispensable for facing the adverse impacts of climate
change.

He said students of schools, colleges and university need proper knowledge
about the importance of biodiversity and natural resource conservation and
climate change issues so that they can contribute to this field.

All government, non-government and research organizations concerned should
come forward and work together to protect the existing wildlife and nature
from further degradation, he added.
