DHAKA, March 20, 2019 (BSS) – Visiting Australian Ambassador for Counter-Terrorism Paul Foley today said his country shares the grief of Muslim communities across the globe and will not tolerate right-wing extremist ideology that fuelled terrorist attacks.

As a longstanding development and security partner, he said Australia would continue support to Bangladesh and its people to address threats of terrorism and violent extremism shared by all countries, an Australian High Commission statement said here today.

During the visit Foley extended his heartfelt condolences to the Bangladeshi victims of the shocking terrorist attack in Christchurch, New Zealand, and their families.

The release said Australian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Julia Niblett welcomed the envoy’s visit here from 19 to 21 March that underlines the importance Australia places on its security engagement with Bangladesh, including to tackle global scourge of terrorism and violent extremism.

Ambassador Foley’s visit is a timely opportunity to explore with senior Bangladesh government law enforcement and public security officials’ effective ways of preventing and countering violent extremism, regardless of its origins, the high commission said.

As Ambassador for Counter-Terrorism, Mr Foley leads Australia’s international engagement on counter-terrorism and counter violent extremism. On Tuesday, Bangladesh government has issued travel advisories for all its citizen living in Australia and New Zealand or intending to visit those countries following the deadly shooting at two mosques in Christchurch leaving 50 deaths on Friday last.
