CU must conserve its rich natural environment: Hasan

CHATTOGRAM, March, 14, 2019 (BSS) – Information Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud today urged Chattogram University (CU) authorities to be cautious in planning the development works on the campus to conserve its rich natural environment.

“The CU syndicate must keep in consideration the issue of nature conservation ahead of initiating any development activity on the campus,” an environmental scientist by background and alumni of the university Hasan told the golden jubilee celebrations of CU’s Chemistry Department.

Hasan is a former student of the department as well while he addressed the ceremony as the chief guest.

The minister said the hilly CU campus is an abode of different plants and known for its flora and fauna which simultaneously earned it an extra natural beauty and that must be conserved at any cost.

He said the CU topography is nearly identical to that of the famous Colonel University of the United States in terms of scenic nature and biodiversity which is rare in other university campuses of the country.

Hasan, also the publicity secretary of the ruling Awami League, spoke as well about the student union activities in universities particularly referring to the just concluded Dhaka University Central Student Union (DUCSU) elections.

He criticized the student groups who boycotted the elections during the middle of the voting process saying how some someone could question the credibility of the election even after winning the DUCSU’s top post.

Hasan said election of student unions in universities were of crucial need for flourishing leadership and expected the CU to hold its student union polls in near future as well.

He simultaneously underscored the need for qualitative research on various issues of national and international importance saying the “ranking of a university depends on its research activities”.

He said the US Colonel University earned the repute of being a top global seat of learning for its research activities which produced 34 Nobel Laureates.

CU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Iftakher Uddin Chowdhury joined the function chaired by Prof Dr Monir Uddin, convenor of the golden jubilee celebration committee.

It was addressed among others by Pro Vice Chancellor Dr Shirin Akther, department’s alumni and premier’s former principal secretary Dr Abdul Karim and CU science faculty dean Prof Dr Shofiul Alam.
