Bangladesh is world’s role model in disaster management: Enamur

DHAKA, March 13, 2019 (BSS) – State Minister for Disaster Management and
Relief Dr Md Enamur Rahman said Bangladesh is now the world’s role model in
disaster management despite being a disaster-prone country.

“Bangladesh frequently faces various natural disasters due to its
geographical location and climate change. There is no alternative to getting
prepared to face these disasters to minimise its loss and damage,” he said.

The state minister was addressing a demonstration on earthquake and fire
arranged on the premises of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University
(BSMMU) in the capital, marking the National Disaster Preparedness Day-2019.

Speaking as the chief guest, Enamur said about 47,000 volunteers were
created across the country to address natural and manmade disasters.

Highlighting the government’s preparedness in dealing with disasters, he
said 39 lakh Palmyra palm saplings were planted across the country and the
palm plantation programme continues to cope with the growing lightning
strikes.

The state minister urged all to come forward in getting people prepared
and creating awareness among them so that they can face any possible
disasters, including flood, cyclone, tidal surge, storm and fire.

BSMMU Vice-Chancellor Prof Kanak Kanti Barua also spoke on the occasion.

Earlier, Enamur inaugurated a national dissemination workshop on safe and
sustainable cities: human securities, migration, and wellbeing at Cirdap
auditorium here.
