DHAKA, April 27, 2017 (BSS) – Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid today said the government is working to modify 12 textbooks of Class IX- X to make those easily understandable and readable to the students.

“We have talked to renowned educationists regarding the modification and updating of 12 textbooks of class IX- X… We are working with expert teams to bring qualitative changes in those textbooks,” he told a press briefing at his ministry.

Leading educationists, including Prof Md Zafar Iqbal and Prof Dr Mohammad Kaikobad and senior officials, among others, were present at the press conference.

Nahid said the textbooks to be modified are: Bangla Literature, English for Today, Bangladesh and Global Studies, Global Civilization, Math, Higher Math, General Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Accounting and Economics.

A committee comprising educationists will modify these textbooks by incorporating important modern texts as well as it will exclude less important contents for ensuring quality textbooks, he added.

“Alongside updating and modifying the textbooks, we are also working to introduce a modern curriculum and develop an acceptable marking system to assess answer papers of examinations accurately,” the minister said.

He also said the government is mulling over reducing number of subjects in public examinations side by side introducing a modern examination system, which will help end holding public examinations within a short period of time.

“We are going to take a tougher stand against coaching culture and guidebooks as these malpractices are affecting the entire education sector. We are also taking advice from our educationists to stop these unacceptable practices,” Nahid added.
