DHAKA, Feb 25, 2018 (BSS) – The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court
(SC) today ordered to quickly dispose of rules issued by the High Court on
the legality of the schedule for Dhaka North City Corporation Mayoral by-
polls, elections to 18 new DNCC wards and 18 new wards of Dhaka South City
Corporation (DSCC).

A four-member Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud
Hossain passed the order after holding hearing on a plea submitted by the
Election Commission (EC).

Senior jurist Barrister Fida M Kamal, aided by Touhidul Islam, took part in
the hearing for EC. Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon stood for DNCC mayoral
candidate Tabith Awal.

“The apex court disposed of a plea filed against the High Court order. The
Appellate Division has ordered to quickly hear and dispose of the rules by
the division bench led by Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore. The stay on the
polls will however, continue,” said advocate Touhidul Islam.

The EC on January 9 declared schedule for holding DNCC Mayoral by-polls and
elections to newly included 18 wards. But the High Court following filing of
three writ petitions against the elections, issued six-month stay on the
polls on January 17. Later, the High Court also stayed the by-polls for 18
new DSCC wards.
