BNP didn’t join city polls to halt development: Dipu

DHAKA, Feb 28, 2019 (BSS) – Awami League joint general secretary and education minister Dr Dipu Moni today said in spite of having congenial election atmosphere BNP did not take part in the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayoral by-polls aimed at halting the country’s current pace of development.

“Opposition party means opposition in the House. Now Jatiya Party is the opposition which joined the polls. BNP did not join despite congenial atmosphere in the polls,” she told a press conference at the party president’s Dhanmondi political office here.

Dipu said the party which did not join polls to halt the country’s development, will be boycotted by the people.

She said as per reports of different media, 50 percent voters have exercised their voting rights in the election and no untoward incidents took place.

“We are optimistic of our candidate Atiqul Islam’s win in the DNCC polls,” she said.

She thanked law enforcement agencies and concerned officials and employees for holding the polls in a free, fair and neutral manner.

AL joint general secretaries Advocate Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Abdur Rahman, organizing secretaries BM Mozammel Haque, AKM Enamul Haque Shamim, relief and social welfare secretary Sujit Roy Nandi, liberation affairs secretary Mrinal Kanti Das, deputy office secretary Barrister Biplab Barua, central working committee members Anwar Hossain and advocate Riazul Kabir Kawser were present in the press conference.
