JS passes CHT (land acquisition) Regulation Bill

SANGSAD BHABAN, Feb 28, 2019 (BSS) – The Jatiya Sangsad today passed the
Chittagong Hill Tracts (Land Acquisition) Regulation (Amendment) Bill, 2019
aiming to bring equality in compensation rate for land acquisition in the
southeastern hills.

Land Minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury moved the bill in the House, which was
unanimously passed by voice votes with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in
the chair.

Piloting the bill, Chowdhury said the bill would replace the Chittagong
Hill Tracts (Land Acquisition) Regulations, 1958, which partly was amended
under a 2018 ordinance.

Under the existing one used to get as compensation 15 percent
compensation, meaning if the local market price of a piece of land was Taka
100, the owner used to get Taka 115.

But the new law suggests 200 percent higher price for any piece of land if
it is acquisitioned for government purpose and 300 percent higher price in
case of acquisition for non-government entities or individuals.

Before the bill was passed in the House, Kazi Firoz Rashid of Dhaka-6,
Fakhrul Imam of Mymensingh-8 and Md. Mujibul Haque of Kishoreganj-3 brought
amendment proposals on the bill, but those were unanimously rescinded by
voice votes.
