Govt wants to modernise railway: PM

DHAKA, Feb 27, 2019 (BSS) – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today said her government wants to modernise Bangladesh Railway and expand its network across the country.

“Bangladesh Railway is a centuries-old state-owned rail transport agency. We’ve taken steps to modernise and expand its network and also signed an agreement with a British firm in this regard,” she said.

The prime minister made the remarks when visiting Malaysian businessman Abu Shahid bin Mohamed paid a courtesy call on her at her Jatiya Sangsad Office here this evening.

After the meeting, PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters.

He said the prime minister apprised Abu Shahid bin Mohamed of her plan to introduce electric and bullet trains in the country aimed at ensuring smooth and fast travel of the people.

Elaborating her government’s initiatives for improving communication system in the capital, she said the work on introduction of metro rail and elevated expressway in Dhaka is going on.

The Malaysian businessman showed his keen interest to work for development of rail and road infrastructures in Bangladesh.

In this regard, Abu Shahid bin Mohamed said Malaysia has expertise and long experience in railway traffic signal system.

PM’s Principal Secretary Md Nojibur Rahman was present on the occasion.
