DHAKA, Feb 27, 2019 (BSS) – Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury today said the constitution of Bangladesh having a provision for reserved seat for women is a special gift from Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

“There is a provision for reserved women seat in the Bangabandhu’s 1972 constitution. Many countries in the world have long been demanding for reserved seat for women in the House, as they have no provisions in this regard,” she said.

The speaker came up with the remarks while addressing the inaugural function of the second phase of a two-day orientation programme for the newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs) at the oath taking conference hall in the JS Bhaban, said an official release here.

“Bangabandhu believed in women empowerment. He had firm believe that along with men, women also should be taken forward,” Dr Sharmin said, adding that it has been reflected in the 1972’s constitution that women have a vital role in political and economic empowerment.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, however, is playing a vital role in consolidating parliamentary democracy, she said, adding the PM has ensured transparency and accountability in the ministries by making the parliamentary standing committees active.

JS secretary-in-charge AYM Golam Kibria delivered welcome address in the function while Deputy Secretary MA Kamal Billah conducted it.
