UN’s Generation Unlimited launched in Bangladesh

DHAKA, Feb 26, 2019 (BSS) – The UN system in association with the government and private sector today launched a move in Bangladesh in line with global initiative to develop skill and create job opportunity for the young people.

State Minister for Labour and Employment Begum Munnujan Sufiyan was present in the launching programme of “Generation Unlimited” in a city hotel.

Generation Unlimited was launched during the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in September last year with an aim to see every young person in education, learning, training or employment by 2030.

Visiting Executive Director of UNICEF Henrietta Fore, Country Director of International Labour Organization (ILO) Tuomo Poutiainen, UN General Humanitarian Envoy Dr Ahmed Al Meraikhi and President of Bangladesh Employers’ Federation (BEF) Kamran Ahmed were also present.

UNICEF Executive Director while talking to newsmen after the event said eight out of 10 young people in low and middle income countries have entrepreneurial capacity, and 7.3 million young people has been set up in Bangladesh to provide necessary supports for skill development under the global initiative.

“In Bangladesh, we have set up the goal of 7.3 million young people, and it is absolutely essential to look after and open up opportunities for them,” she said urging business community, government, civil society to work together.

Henrietta Fore said Generation Unlimited launched as global a initiative targeting every young person between age 10 and 24 be in school learning, training and get age appropriate employment by the year 2030.

The ILO Country Director said Generation Unlimited is to unlock young people and women’s entrepreneurial capability through mentoring on the job type of programme and unleashing the innovation capacity. “Money is available in Bangladesh and money is not a problem,” he added.

The UN General Humanitarian Envoy talked about crucial role of private sector not only creation of employment but also on humanitarian ground by providing funds on the job.

The BEF President laid emphasis on the skill development on 21st century and upgrading the training and certification system so that skills are recognized both at home and abroad.
