Razzak stresses harmony of research and marketing strategy for potatoes

DHAKA, Feb 25, 2019 (BSS)- Agriculture Minister Dr. M Abdur Razzak today said that a strong marketing strategy along with some research can boost the demand for potato, the fourth highest growing product of Bangladesh, in the market.

“Last year, the potato production was about 30 lac metric tons, which was the more than demand. But we could not enter into the international market only for the ‘late blight syndrome’ of the potatoes,” said the minister while meeting the Country Manager and South Asian Regional Coordinator of International Potato Center (CIP), Dr. U.S Sing at his office room at the secretariat here.

“Potato is the fourth highest growing product of Bangladesh…research for updated agricultural methods like tissue culturing and stamp cutting can expedite the production even more,” he added.

The CIP representative assured the minister of helping Bangladesh in the research programmes and strategic developments.

M Nasiruzzaman, the Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr MA Bari, former Director of Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI), Dr. Lutful Hossain, Professor of Bangladesh Agriculture University, and Dr. Samrendu Mohanty, Director Asia of International Potato Center, (CIP), among others, were present at the meeting.
