BCL, JCD, left alliances are yet to collect DUCSU nomination papers

DHAKA, Feb 20, 2019 (BSS) – Candidates from mainstream student organisations–Bangladesh Chhatra league (BCL), Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), Progressive Students’ Alliance (PSA)– did not collect any nomination forms for the upcoming Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) and hall union polls for the second consecutive day today.

As per the election schedule, announced on February 11, aspirants can collect nomination papers from their respective halls from 10 am to 4 pm, everyday till February 25 without any fees.

Talking to BSS, Chief Returning Officer Professor Mahfuzur Rahman said, “Active political students’ organisations have not collected forms yet. I think they will collect later. But we are performing our duties.”

According to the hall authorities, around four dozen candidates collected nomination papers so far from respective halls in two days. Most of them do not belong to any political students’ body.

Meanwhile, aspirants from BCL especially the central and DU unit presidents and general secretaries yesterday met with the Awami League high-ups about forming their panels.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will sit with us to make a final decision. BCL will finalise its panel and collect nomination forms based on her decision, BCL central president Rezwanul Haque Choudhury Shovon.

Though Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), student wing of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), is now active on the DU campus and they have not collected nomination papers yet.

Yesterday, they met the Vice-Chancellor (VC) as DU authorities are yet to meet their demands, said JCD leaders.

JCD’s demands include setting up of polling booths outside the residential halls, deferring election for three months and raising the age limit to 30.

On the other hand, Bangladesh Chhatra Federation, student wing of Gonosonghati Andolon, brought out a procession, staged a sit-in in front of VC’s office demanding setting up polling booths at the faculty buildings.

They also handed over a memorandum to the VC Prof Akhtaruzzaman with a sheet of a mass signature campaign in favour of their demand.

Left students’ Progressive Students’ Alliance and Anti Imperialism Students’ Alliance have not collected their forms.

Convener of PSA and also the DU unit president of Socialist Students’ Front Salman Siddiqi said, “We are still discussing about our panels and overall situation. Hopefully, we will collect forms after confirming panel”.

Candidates can submit nomination papers till 12 noon on February 26. The papers would be scrutinized from 2 pm on February 26 while nomination papers can be withdrawn till 1 pm of March 2.

After a hiatus of nearly three decades, the much awaited DUCSU polls are scheduled to be held on March 11.

In line with the amended constitution of DUCSU, election will be held to 25 posts of DUCSU and 13 posts of every hall union. Election to DUCSU and hall unions will be held from 8am to 2pm without any interruption.
