BNP along with Jamaat should seek apology: Dr Hasan
DHAKA, Feb 20, 2019 (BSS) – Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud today said Jamaat-e-Islami would not get impunity from the charges of massacre, arson attacks and repression on women carried out during the liberation war even if the party begs apology due to its role in the 1971 war.
“Resignations of some Jamaat leaders and their apologies to the nation are the part of freeing the party’s from pressure both locally and internationally,” he said while addressing a book publication ceremony at Begum Sufia Kamal Auditorium of the National Museum here.
The book titled ‘Ganatantrik Agrajatray Sheikh Hasina’ written by Sujan Halder, was unveiled on the occasion.
Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University Prof Dr Akhtaruzzaman and general secretary of AL Dhaka South unit Shahe Alam Murad, among others, spoke at the function with AL office secretary Golam Rabbani Bablu in the chair.
Speaking as the chief guest, Dr Hasan said as Jamaat-e-Islami formed a coalition with BNP and did politics together, so the BNP lost its eligibility to getting impunity. “And BNP should seek apology for sheltering Jamaat and making ties with the party to form government. That’s why BNP along with Jamaat should seek apology,” he said.
He said the BNP’s recent decision not to take part in the upcoming upazila and city corporation elections means that the party is getting isolated from people gradually.
Dr Hasan, also AL publicity and publication secretary, said the BNP may loss its courage to take part in the elections after its massive defeat in the last general election, urging BNP to show courage and take part in the upcoming elections.
Highlighting the life and works of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he said the Prime Minister is not only a symbol of development, peace, democracy, and the spirit of liberation war, free thinking and non-communal spirit, but also a symbol of humanity. “She (Sheikh Hasina) gave shelter to about 11 lakh Rohingyas with affection,” Hasan said.
Noting that the Prime Minister has advanced the country in a democratic manner, the information minister said: “She is not only an individual, but an institution”.
He said Sheikh Hasina returned home on May 17, 1981. “This was not only her homecoming day, but also the day of returning development, peace, democracy and the spirit of liberation war.”
The anti-liberation forces tried to kill her many times, Dr Hasan said, but their plots were foiled every time, stating that Sheikh Hasina became the country’s premier for a record of four times.
