Govt takes new strategies on Rohingya issue: Shahriar
DHAKA, Feb 19, 2019 (BSS) – State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam today said the government has reviewed the overall situation regarding the Rohingya crisis and taken some new strategies for ensuring safe repatriation of the displaced Myanmar nationals from Bangladesh.
“Our multilateral activities regarding the Rohingya crisis are going on … we have already taken some new strategies to resolve the issue and those will be visible soon,” he said.
The state minister was talking to newsmen after holding a meeting with British Secretary of State for International Development and Minister for Women and Equalities Penny Mordaunt at the state guest house Padma.
He said the government is in discussion with other countries on the Rohingya issue to find a lasting solution to it.
Various matters related to the Rohingya crisis and bilateral issues and mutual trust came up for discussion in the meeting.
The UK minister said the Rohingya people want to go back to their motherland and it is very important to make sure that they would be protected after their repatriation.
“We will do everything we can (to resolve the crisis). We will use every tools of diplomacy to resolve the issue,” she told the journalists.
Mordaunt, who visited the Rohingya camps on Monday, said the international push on Myanmar needs to continue and the issue can’t be dropped off from the international agenda.
Mentioning that the UK is one of the largest donors to the Rohingya crisis, providing o129 million in funding to Bangladesh since the crisis began, she said the British public showed tremendous compassion for the Rohingyas.
More than 745,000 Rohingya people have fled from Myanmar’s Rakhine State to Bangladesh since August 2017, escaping violence in Myanmar and joining roughly 200,000 others already displaced in the Cox’s Bazar area by previous cycles of violence.
