CEC asks law enforces to act neutrally in city polls

DHAKA, Feb 18, 2019 (BSS) – Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda today asked the law enforces to discharge duties maintaining neutrality and sincerity in the upcoming Dhaka north and south city corporations slated for February 28.

He came up with the directives at a coordination meeting at the city’s Agargaon Nirbachan Bhaban on law and order marking the by election to mayoral post of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and election to councilor posts in both north and south city corporations.

Huda expressed his optimism that the election will be held in a free, fair and neutral manner as like as the December 30 national election.

He asked the members of law enforcement agencies to ensure the congenial atmosphere in the polls as voters can exercise their franchise properly.

The CEC said the commission wants a participatory and competitive election but they have nothing to do if all parities do not join the polls.

Huda extended thanks to law enforcement agencies to discharge their duties with sincerity to hold the parliamentary election in a proper manner without any violence.

Election Commissioners Mahbub Talukdar, Md. Rafiqul Islam, Kabita Khanam and Brigadier General Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury (retd.) and EC Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed attended the meeting.

Besides, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Mohammad Javed Patwary, Director General of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Benazir Ahmed, DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah, representatives of BGB, DGFI, LGRD and rural development and cooperatives ministry, home ministry were present in the meeting.

The last elections to DSCC and DNCC were held on April 28, 2015. But, the DNCC mayoral post fell vacant following the death of its mayor Annisul Huq.

Besides, a total of 36 new wards were added to the two city corporation. As per the schedule, by election to DNCC mayoral post and election to councilor and reserved women councilor in newly inducted 36 wards will also be held on February 28.
