Upazila polls to be competitive: CEC

DHAKA, Feb 17, 2019 (BSS) – Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda today expressed his hope that the upcoming Upazila Parishad elections will be competitive with the participation of many qualified candidates.

“Election Commission (EC) always wants to hold competitive elections. Many qualified persons from the political parties or out of the parties vie in the local government polls. So, there is no doubt that the upcoming upazila elections will be a competitive one,” he said.

The CEC said those while inaugurating a training programme for the election officials at Electoral Training Institute (ETI) in the city’s Agargaon area.

Urging the election officials to conduct the elections neutrally as per the laws, Nurul Huda said, “We will take strict measures if the election is disrupted for you”.

He also urged the officials to remain alert about any breach of electoral code of conduct, saying that many people violate the electoral code of conduct knowingly or unknowingly.

The poling agents are an important part of the election process, the CEC said, urging the election officials to ensure safety and security of the agents on their return home after performing their duties.

As per the election schedule, elections will be held in 87 upazilas on March 10 in the first phase, in 129 upazilas on March 18 in the second phase and in 127 upazilas on March 24 in the third phase.

Besides, the fourth and fifth phases of the Upazila Parishad elections will be held on March 31 and July 18 respectively.
