CEC asks ROs to be liable to constitution

DHAKA, Feb 14, 2019 (BSS) – Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda today asked the returning officers (ROs) and assistant returning officers (AROs) of the upcoming upazila parishad elections to remain responsible to the country’s Constitution in discharging their duties.

“As officers of the republic, you should be only liable to the Constitution and the republic not to any political parties or individuals,” he told a briefing to the ROs and AROs at the Agargaon Nirbachan Bhaban here.

He said those who will administer the upazila election will conduct it as constitutional duties.

Huda said ROs and AROs skills in conducting the polls will decide how the election will be conducted and how the representatives of local government will be elected.

The CEC called for coordination among ROs, AROs, election officers at district and upazila level, poling officers, members of law enforcement agencies, constants and voters in holding a free, fair, neutral and peaceful election.

Election Commissioners Mahbub Talukdar, Md. Rafiqul Islam, Kabita Khanam and Brigadier General Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury (retd.) attended the briefing with EC Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed in the chair.
