Four to walk gallows in Rupa murder case

TANGAIL, Feb 12, 2018 (BSS) – A court here today sentenced four transport workers to death in a case filed for killing law student Jakia Sultana Rupa after gang-rape on a moving bus at Madhupur upazila of the district last August.

Acting Judge of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Abul Monshur Mia delivered the verdict on Monday morning.

The death row convicts are bus driver Habibur, 45, and three helpers Shamim, 26, Akram, 35, and Jahangir, 35.

The court also sentenced the supervisor of the bus, Safar alias Gendu, to seven years rigorous imprisonment and fined Taka 1 lakh, said Anwarul Islam, inspector of the court.

Rupa, a student of Dhaka Ideal Law College, was murdered after gang rape in a running bus while going to Mymensingh from Bogra on August 25 last year. Police recovered the body of Rupa from Panchmail area of Madhupur upazila on that night.

Following post-mortem, she was buried at the Tangail town central graveyard as unclaimed body. Later, the victim’s brother identified her seeing her photograph published in a newspaper on August 28.

On the same day, police arrested the five accused. Later, they gave their confessional statement before the court.

On August 31, police exhumed the body of Rupa and handed it over to her family for burial.

Police pressed charges against the convicts on October 25 last year.

The Judge after examining 32 witnesses and evidences found them guilty and announced the judgment in presence of them.
