Bangladesh to become mid-income nation within timeframe: Swiss President

DHAKA, Feb 5, 2018 (BSS) – Visiting Swiss President Alain Berset today expressed his optimism that Bangladesh would become a mid-income country within the stipulated timeframe.

The Swiss President expressed such hope while addressing the Bangladesh-Switzerland Business Forum as the chief guest held at a city hotel.

Jointly organized by the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) and the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), the Business Forum was addressed, among others, by Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal and Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali as special guests, said a Planning Ministry press release.

Chief Coordinator on SDG affairs at the Prime Minister’s Office Md Abul Kalam Azad, BIDA Executive Chairman Kazi M Aminul Islam, and the leaders of Bangladesh-Switzerland business forum attended the meeting.

Noting the continued support of Switzerland in Bangladesh’s progress and development efforts, Alain Berset said: “The Bangladesh-Switzerland bilateral relation has entered into a new era,”

He also expressed his satisfaction at the continued and rising economic growth by Bangladesh.

The Planning Minister said the relation between Bangladesh and Switzerland is a long standing one in terms of development cooperation and this relations would further intensify through this visit of the Swiss President.

Terming Bangladesh as an excellent destination for making investment, he urged the Swiss businesses to make more investment in Bangladesh.

AHM Mustafa Kamal, commonly known as Lotus Kamal, said no other country in the world except Bangladesh could offer such facilities to the businesses to make investment here in Bangladesh.

He mentioned that Bangladesh needs the support of developed country like Switzerland to face the challenges of the 21st century alongside further expediting the unimaginable progress of the country.

The Minister also expressed his firm resolve that Switzerland would come forward to a large extend to assist Bangladesh in the coming days.

Kamal extended his thanks to the Swiss President for expressing solidarity with Bangladesh over the Rohingya crisis as well as providing humanitarian assistance to them.

He said apart from further strengthening the bilateral relations of the two countries, there is also a need to further boost the cultural cooperation.
