Eviction drive in Karnaphuli River continues on 4th day

CHATTOGRAM, Feb 7, 2019 (BSS)- The ongoing eviction drive on both banks of
the river Karnaphuli, the economic life line of country’s premier sea port
Chattogram, continued for the fourth consecutive day today.

Chattogram District Administration in collaboration with different stake
holders including Chattogram Development Authority, Chattogram Port
Authority, Directorate of Chattogram Environment, Chattogram Metropolitan
Police (CMP) and power development board is carrying out the drive, led by
executive magistrate and assistant commissioner (land) of Patenga Tahmilur
Rahman.

Senior Assistant Commissioner of CMP Nobel Chakma and senior police
superintendent Kazi Mohammad Tareq Aziz are assisting the drive with over 200
members of the law enforcement agency.

During the drive, one and a half kilometer area in north bank of the river
Karnaphuli has been freed from illegal occupation and nearly six acres of
land were recovered by bulldozing 186 illegal structures, said executive
magistrate Tahmilur Rahman.

The demolished structures include – business establishments, the offices
of different organizations, salt godowns, warehouses and a tin-roofed
structure of different Jetty ghats.

On July 18, 2010, the court, after hearing a writ petition by Human Rights
and Peace for Bangladesh, ordered to stop river encroachment, land filling,
and construction of all types of establishments on the river bank.

In 2012, the HC ordered the district administration to conduct a survey to
assess how much land of the Karnaphuli River was grabbed and prepare a list
of land grabbers.

After three years of survey, the administration submitted a report in
2016, saying that there were 2,112 illegal installations on the river bank.
