AL’s victory in last polls was very much expected : PM

SANGSAD BHABAN, Feb 6, 2019 (BSS)- Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today said the
Awami League’s victory in the last parliamentary election was very much
expected which was also forecasted in a number of local and foreign surveys.

“There are many reasons why people voted for Awami League in the last general
election,” she said adding that one of the main reasons was huge development
work implemented over the last ten years, benefitting the common people.

The prime minister said this while replying to a question from treasury bench
member Mahfuzur Rahman (Chottagram-3) during Prime Minister’s Question-Answer
Session in the parliament today with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Choudhury in
the chair.

Sheikh Hasina said many mega projects undertaken by the Awami League
government made the people confident about the ability of the party to take
forward the country to the path of prosperity.

The Awami League government has set the country in a dignified position
amongst world community taking the country to the trajectory of a developing
country and erasing the bad name of the country as a ‘nation of beggar’, she
said.

Absence of strong opposition and lack of preparedness to woo public support
were also other reasons for colossal defeat of the rivals of Awami League in
the polls, the prime minister said.

Sheikh Hasina said people of every sector of the society including
businessmen, doctors, engineers, agriculturists, educationalists, artistes,
literateurs, journalists, priests, members of law enforcing agencies and armed
forces tendered their support to Awami League before the election.

“The overwhelming victory in the election was a result of the tide of mass
people in favour of Awami League,” she said.
