Fiber optical connectivity to 3,600 unions, police offices: PM

SANGSAD BHABAN, Feb 6, 2019 (BSS) – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today said
the government has been implementing National Information and Communication
Technology Infrastructure Development Phase-III (Info-Sarkar phase-III)
project to bring 2,600 unions and 1,000 police offices under fiber optical
connectivity facility.

“Under the project some 1,770 unions have already been connected with the
optical fiber cable network and the rest 830 unions will be connected by June
30, 2019,” she said this responding to a starred question from treasury bench
member Selim Altaf Gorge of Kushtia-4 in the Jatiya Sangsad.

The Prime Minister said the government has undertaken various programmes to
build Bangladesh a modern, knowledge and technology based middle income
country.

Under the programmes, the government has been implementing a project
“Connected Bangladesh” aimed at giving union connectivity to 772 out of
network unions at remote and farmland areas, Sheikh Hasina said.

The Prime Minister said if the project is implemented the government would
ensure broadband connectivity across the country resulting e-service and
employment sectors at rural level would be expanded.
She said the government would install Union Information Service Centre at
1,013 unions through solar power having no electricity.
Besides, the government introduced high speed internet structure and launched
digital services at Moheshkhali through Digital Island Moheshkhali Project,
Sheikh Hasina added.

She informed the House that the BTCL set up 56 km optical fiber cable at no-
man’s-land at Banglabandha in Panchagar district for connecting with Network
Operation Centre (NOC) at Shiliguri side by side increasing capacity of
connection and data sharing among India, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh under
South Asia Sub Regional Economic Cooperation Information Highway (SASEC IH) of
Regional Network (RN) project.

The BTCL also installed transmission equipment at Chuadanga, Meherpur,
Moghbazar, Panchagar and Thakurgaon to connect NOC at Shiliguri via Kolkata,
Sheikh Hasina added.
