Tenth JS polls foiled assumption of power by third force
SANGSAD BHABAN, Jan 29, 2018 (BSS) – The holding of the
elections of the tenth Jatiya Sangsad had foiled assumption of
the power by the unconstitutional third force.
“The unconstitutional third force could have come to the power
if the elections of 10th parliament was foiled by the
disruptive force,” commerce minister Tofail Ahmed told this in
the Jatiya Sangsad today on the occasion of the fourth
anniversary of the 10th parliament.
Rising on a point of order in the house, Chief Whip ASM Feroz
flagged the issue and listed major achievements of the 10th
parliament. He mentioned that the current parliament has been
enjoying a very cordial, peaceful and lively atmosphere with
the effective cooperation of the treasury and the opposition
bench members.
ASM Firoz said the process of democratic path has been
protected through the holding of the JS polls.
Narrating the background of 2014 JS polls, Commerce Minister
Tofail Ahmed said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had invited
Begum Khaleda Zia for holding dialogue to join her party in
the elections. But she rejected it. Then even after the polls,
the Prime Minister went to her house to express sympathy after
the death of Arafat Rahman Koko, son of Khaleda Zia. But
Khaleda Zia forcefully barred the Prime Minister at her door
with unprofessional behavior.
“Many people questioned the legitimacy of the elections. One
of those Dr Kamal Hossain, but he was also elected unopposed
in 1973 and couldn’t win any subsequent polls,” Tofail
recalled.
He told the House that the 10th parliament member Saber
Hossain Chowdhury and Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury were
elected IPU President and CPA executive chairperson
respectively as the representatives of the democratic country.
The commerce minister said the country is now the role model
of development under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh
Hasina, adding, “Many developed countries of the world now
want to hear the story of the development of Bangladesh.
Bangladesh is now ahead of Pakistan in many areas like socio-
economic and other development fields.”
“The BNP is now regretting for not participating in the
elections and felt frustrations,” Tofail added.
Besides, ruling party’s Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Abdul Matin
Khasru, the opposition bench members Kazi Firoz Rashid,
Ziauddin Bablu, Tajul Islam, Nozibul Basher Maijbandari and
Abul Kalam Azad also took part in the short unscheduled
discussions on the fourth anniversary of the tenth JS.
