Boro paddy farming progressing fast in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, Feb 04, 2019 (BSS) – The farming of Boro paddy, a high yielding
crop, has been progressing fast in all the seven upazilas of the district
during the current season amid much enthusiasm.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has set a target to bring a total
of 1, 27,740 hectares of land under the Boro cultivation this year with the
production target of 5,21,789 metric tons of clean rice, official sources
said.

Of the total, some 20,478 hectares of land would be brought under the
farming in Sadar upazila, 15,339 in Sadullapur upazila, 13,420 in Palashbari,
30,463 in Gobindaganj upazila, 24,930 in Sundarganj upazila, 14,623 in
Shaghata upazila and 8,427 in Fulchhari upazila, they said.

The farmers have already prepared seed beds on over 7500 hectares of low
land.

The peasants now are passing busy times with transplanting the boro
seedlings with the hopes of getting desired output, said Al Mahmud Sarker, a
farmer of Barobaldia village under Sadar upazila.

To make the cultivation a grand success, necessary measures had been taken
to supply fertilizers, insecticides and other agri inputs to the farmers at
fair prices with ensuring irrigation facilities, said an official of DAE.

Besides, the department is imparting trainings for the farmers in field
level to boost production, said Abul Kalam Azad, an high official of the DAE
here.

Apart from this, the commercial and scheduled banks have taken initiatives
to disburse loan to the farmers on easy terms to help them cultivate the crop
without economical troubles, said Abdus Sattar, an official of Rajshahi
Krishi Unnayan Bank.

Talking to the BSS, acting deputy director (DD) of DAE Showkat Osman said
the farmers were advised to transplant the raised seedlings of the boro paddy
on their respective land as per the suggestions of the field level sub
assistant agriculture officers.

He said over 75 percent transplantation of boro seedlings had already been
completed in the district and it would continue till February 28.
