Eviction drive in Karnaphuli River begins Monday

CHATTOGRAM, Feb 3, 2019 (BSS)- The long awaited eviction drive for over
2,100 illegal structures erected on both banks of the river Karnaphuli is
scheduled to start tomorrow.

Chattogram District Administration will conduct the eviction in
collaboration with the help of different stake holders including Chattogram
Development Authority, Chattogram Port Authority, Directorate of Chattogram
Environment and Metropolitan Police from February 4.

The decision came following an emergency meeting regarding the eviction
at the Deputy Commissioner Conference room on last Thursday.

Deputy Commissioner of Chattogram Mohammad Ilias Hossain told BSS
tonight that in first zone 10 acres of government land would be recovered
after evicting 200 illegal structures.

“All illegal structures would gradually be evicted,” DC said.

Following the high court order the district administration detected at
least 2,112 illegal structures, and submitted the report to the court in
2016.

The land Minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury while inspecting the eviction
programs at Sadarghat point yesterday told journalists that none will be
spared from eviction whoever he or she might be powerful.

“The government land must be got back and there is none influential then
government,” the Minister said adding that the river karnaphuli must be freed
from encroachers.
