President unveils book on 1971
DHAKA, Jan 28, 2019 (BSS) – President M Abdul Hamid today said the nation and particularly the new generation demand extensive and quality studies on 1971 as he unveiled a new book on the Liberation War from the military perspective.
“There are many publications on the freedom struggle and the Liberation War but only few of them are based on extensive research,” he said launching the “1971: Resistance, Resilience and Redemption” at the Darbar hall of Bangabhaban.
The president called the book, authored by his military secretary Major General Md Sarwar Hossain, “an important research work” saying it cross-sectioned many things of the Liberation War, from beginning to its end.
He urged prudent writers, researchers, journalists and intellectuals to supplement such publications through their own research works to record the country’s in-depth and real history.
“This (their initiatives) will help the present and future generations to know the real history of the country . . . they would be imbued with the spirit of the Liberation War,” he said.
The president said many publications are based alone on a particular area, force and operation incidents as well the extensive more researches were needed as “the Liberation War took place at different parts of the country leaving many memories and historical elements”.
He said the number of freedom fighters and witnesses of the 1971 episode were dwindling gradually and it may so happen that none of them will remain alive after 10 or 20 years”.
“But their contributions to the Liberation War, their heroism and glories will remain eternal,” he said.
President Hamid also asked all concerned to preserve historical elements and evidence of freedom struggle carefully to keep the history in its right track as “deliberate attempts” were witnessed in the past to distort the history.
“The anti-liberation forces want to exhaust every chance . . . they have constantly been trying to distort the history of the Liberation War and freedom struggle at different times,” he said.
The president, however, said the conspirators succeeded temporarily but eventually backtracked “as the history follows its own course”.
“The quarters which distort the actual history will ultimately be thrown to the dustbin,” he said.
National Professor Dr Anisuzzaman, Former Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Emiretus Prof Dr AK Azad Chowdhury, Prof Syed Manzoorul Islam, Prof Dr Muhammad Zafor Iqbal and writer of the book Sarwar Hossain also spoke on the occasion.
