Shahriar for reaching SDGs messages to grassroots population

RAJSHAHI, Jan 26, 2019 (BSS) – State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar
Alam, MP, has called for reaching the messages of Sustainable Development
Goals (SDGs) to grassroots level for achieving those successfully by 2030.

He said the present government under the dynamic leadership of Prime
Minister Sheikh Hasina has adopted diversified steps to attain the goals and
all the district and upazila level government officials and public
representatives should discharge their duties with utmost sincerity and
honesty to supplement the government efforts.

The state minister was addressing the inaugural session of a daylong
divisional level workshop titled “SDGs Achievement in Local Level” at
conference hall of Deputy Commissioner in Rajshahi today as chief guest.

Governance Innovation Unit of Prime Minister’s Office organized the
workshop in association with Divisional Commissioner’s office. More than 110
district and upazila level officials and others concerned from all eight
districts under Rajshahi division joined the workshop.

Shahriar Alam underscored the need for capacity development of the local
people through the best uses of local resources so that they can contribute
to achieving the SDGs. “We have advantages in some sectors to achieve the
goals than many other countries,” he mentioned referring to the global
aspects.

Chief Coordinator (SDG) of Prime Minister’s office Abul Kalam Azad,
Agriculture Secretary Md Nasiruzzaman, Chairman of Barind Multipurpose
Development Authority Dr Akram Hossain Chowdhury and Commissioner of Rajshahi
Metropolitan Police Hafiz Akter addressed the session as special guests with
Commissioner of Rajshahi division Nur-Ur-Rahman in the chair.

State Minister Shahriar Alam mentioned that partnership and collaboration
among concerned entities could also make easier to extract resources needed
for achieving the SDGs.

To this end, sustainable coordinated efforts are the demand of the time. In
his speech, Abul Kalam Azad said the government has taken a number of
initiatives for achieving the SDGs, hoping the government would be successful
in achieving the targets as the country already achieved the MDGs.

He urged government officials to focus on crops, livestock, forestry,
fisheries and aquaculture as those are powerful phenomenon to reduce poverty
and hunger.

To this end, personal commitment is very important to implement SDGs. “If
we are committed to our own responsibility, SDGs could be achieved,” he
added.
