‘Madhu Mela’ from tomorrow in Jashore

JASHORE, Jan 21, 2019 (BSS) – A weeklong ‘Madhu Mela’, to mark 195th birth
anniversary of great poet and originator of Bangla sonnets Michael Madhusudan
Dutt, will begin tomorrow at Sagordari in Keshabpur Upazila of the district.

Different cultural organisations in association with district and upazila
administration have taken various programmes on the occasion. The Mela (fair)
will continue till January 28.

The programmes include circus, sports competition, seminar on Madhusudan’s
life and works and cultural functions during the fair.

State Minister for Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-
operatives Swapan Bhattachariya will inaugurate the fair as the chief guest.

Sheikh Afil Uddin MP, Mej Gen (Retd) Prof Dr M Nasir Uddin MP, Kazi Nabil
Ahamed MP, Ranojit Kumar Roy MP and Ismat Ara Sadique MP will be present as
special guests.

Khulna Divisional Commissioner Lokman Hossain Miah presided over the
function.

A total of 200 stalls have already been set up on the fair venue.

Michael Madhusudan Dutt was born in a zamindar family at Sagardari on
January 25, 1824, to Rajnarayan Dutt and Jhannabi Devi. He passed away at
Kolkata General Hospital on June 29, 1873, only three days after his wife
Henrietta breathed her last. The poet was buried at Park Street in Kolkata.
