14th death anniversary of Manik Saha observed

KHULNA, Jan 15, 2018 (BSS) – The 14th death anniversary of eminent
journalist Manik Saha was observed today here with the demand of capital
punishment of his killers.

Marking the day, different organisations, including Khulna Press Club
(KPC), Manik Saha Smirity Parisad, ruling Awami League, Communist Party of
Bangladesh, Udichi Shilpa Goshthi and Khulna Union of Journalists (KUJ), paid
rich tributes to the late newsman at the monument built on the premises of
KPC.

Chhatra Union, Khulna unit staged a candlelight vigil there at dawn.

A rally participated, among others, by President of Khulna Press Club
Faruk Ahmed, journalists – Mokbul Hossain Mintu, Sheikh Abu Hassan, Mallick
Sudhangsu, SM Zahid Hossain, Md Saheb Ali, Mahbub Alam Sohag, Gaurango Nandi,
Rokib Uddin Pannu, Shah Alam, H M Alauddin and Sohrab Hossain – was held in
front of the press club in the morning.

Speakers at the rally said they are not satisfied with verdict of Manik
Saha murder case which sentenced nine outlaws of banned Biplobi (Janajuddha)
and Purba Banglar Communist Party to life-term imprisonment and acquitted two
outlaws on November 30, 2016.

They also demanded capital punishment of the people involved in the
killing of Manik Saha.

They said at least 25 newsmen, including Humayun Kabir Balu, were killed
in the region over the past two decades, but most of the masterminds and
assassins still remain beyond the reach of justice.

Manik, reporter of Sangbad, New Age, Ekhushey TV and BBC Bangla Service
based in Khulna, was killed in a bomb blast at Chhota Mirzapur in the Khulna
city on January 15, 2004.
