Shahab Uddin for taking adaptable measures to face climate risks

MOULVIBAZAR, Jan 17, 2019 (BSS) – Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin has said that the government would embark on fresh adaptable measures to cope with the challenges of climate change risks to save people from adverse impacts.

“Our country is on-again-and-off-again faced with floods, droughts, excessive rainfalls and cyclones due to adverse impacts of climate change. Deforestation, filling up of canals and ditches are among the major causes behind the calamities,” he told a reception ceremony at his contingency Barlekha Sadar upazila’s Ahmad Mansion ground in the district on Wednesday.

On the day, the minister toured different places of his constituency for the first time after taking charge.

Shahab Uddin said in some places rivers, canals and water bodies were grabbed illegally by the vested quarters causing environmental crisis.

“We will have to work properly to save the people from adverse impacts of climate change,” he said.

He assured of taking steps to stop cutting of trees illegally in forests and destroying of hills.

The minister pledged to bring Hakaluki haor and Patharia hill under eco-tourism to attract tourists from home and abroad for visiting these attractive tourism spots.

Upazila Awami League senior vice-president Dr Pranoy Kumar Dey chaired the function while its general secretary Anwar Uddin, Upazila Jatiya Party president Advocate Afjal Hossain, Bangladesh Anjumane Al Islah president KM Saleh Ahmad Kabir, Upazila AL organizing secretary Abul Imam Md Kamran Chowdhury and Upazila Jubo League President Taj Uddin addressed the function, among others.
