PM’s Delta Plan is to tackle climate impact: Speaker

RANGPUR, Jan 17, 2019 (BSS) – Speaker of Jatiya Sangshad Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury today said the Delta Plan of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is an epoch-making initiative to face adverse impact of climate change.

Dr Shirin said this while inaugurating a three-day Climate and Agriculture Fair-2019 organised by the ‘Samokal Samaj Bikas Sangstha’ at Jahangirabad Hat in Pirganj upazila of the district.

She said, “It is possible to build a poverty-free country through developing the agricultural economy by assisting the farmers to adapt to climate change and increase food production.”

The fair is showcasing organic crop farming, climate resilient agri-technologies and crop varieties and marketing facilities of agro-products.

The Speaker said the government has formed its own climate fund, created cyclone shelters in coastal belts and evolved salinity, flood and drought- tolerant rice varieties to achieve sustainability in agriculture by adapting the farmers to climate change.

“Bangladesh has achieved food autarky by adopting an appropriate agriculture policy,” she said putting emphasis on innovating newer ideas and technologies for proper preservation and marketing of foods.

With Pirganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer TMA Momin in the chair, upazila chairman Noor Mohammad Mondal, General Secretary of Pirganj upazila Awami League (AL) and Pirganj municipal Mayor Tazimul Islam Shamim, upazila Vice-chairman Monayem Sarkar Manu, Cultural Affairs Secretary of district AL Shahidul Islam Pintu, President Samokal Samaj Bikas Sangstha Abdul Kuddus Mondal addressed the function.
